LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A trip to the gas station ended up winning one Washington County man tens of thousands of dollars.

Cord Brearton, of Willisburg, Kentucky, was on his way home from work one day last month when he stopped at the PV & P Mart in Springfield to buy a scratch-off ticket.

Kentucky Lottery officials said the Millionaire Club Scratch-off stood out most to him because it was ticket "001" on the roll.

"I was going to go in half with my buddy, but he told me to just go for it," Brearton told officials, adding that his friend checked the odds of the tickets before deciding to make the purchase.

Brearton purchased the ticket for $50. Despite scoring nothing from the ticket's first bonus, he continued scratching off more boxes and to his surprise, he had won.

"I scratched the second bonus, and it said I won $10,000!" he said. "I scanned the barcode [on the machine] and it said I won $50,000, I couldn't believe it!"

Brearton told officials he tried to tell everyone about his winnings. He sent pictures to friends and posted the ticket on social media in shock of his prize money, lottery officials said.

According to the lottery, luck seems to run in the family as Brearton's brother-in-law also won a large prize on a Kentucky Lottery Scratch-off ticket recently.

As for his winnings, Brearton said he plans to buy a truck with the money so he can put in more hours at work.

The lottery said he took home a check for $36,000 after taxes on Jan. 30. The gas station will also receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
