CORYDON, Ind. — A southern Indiana woman is dead after seemingly fleeing from authorities, according to Indiana State Police (ISP).
ISP Sgt. Carey Huls said state trooper Nathan Newton was patrolling on State Road 62 around 7:30 on Saturday, Dec. 16.
According to authorities, Newton witnessed a woman, later identified as Sierra Rose Baylor, driving an SUV "completely disregard" a stop sign at the intersection of State Road 62 and Water Street in downtown Corydon.
Baylor then didn't slow down as it an past the stop sign and crossed the highway, so Newton turned on his police lights and began following the SUV to conduct a traffic stop. But as Newton turned on Water Street, Baylor made a u-turn and passed his police cruiser before turning back onto State Road 62.
ISP said Newton turned around, activating his siren, but before he could catch up to the SUV, Baylor turned off the right side of the road, near the intersection of Woodland Avenue, and crashed into a tree. The collision ejected Baylor and killed her.
The Harrison County Coroner's office identified the woman as 27-year-old Sierra Rose Baylor of Corydon, Ind.
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation, but ISP said alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
