Court documents show why Kerry Porter was exonerated after 14 years

A State agency considers Juan Sanders as the primary suspect in the murder of Tyrone Camp. It's a case that remains unsolved.

Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - In court documents, WHAS11 uncovered details of why Kerry Porter was released from prison after more than a dozen years for a wrongful conviction.

A State agency considers Juan Sanders as the primary suspect in the murder of Tyrone Camp. It's a case that remains unsolved.

Twenty-four hours of freedom after 14 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit; Kerry Porter is now enjoying time with family at his sister's house.

'It's good to meet you,' said Porter.

'You're my uncle,' exclaims his nephew.

'Give me a big hug,' said Porter.

New DNA evidence helped clear Porter for the murder of Tyrone Camp.

'Mr. Porter did not commit this offense,' said Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Stengel.

'You look back and you're out of the belly of the beast. It's a cesspool of hatred and bitterness. That's why I don't go for bitterness because I've seen it eat up these other inmates that I talked to and they see nothing but that and that's why they can't get their freedom,' said Porter.

In court documents, it shows key witness Francois Cunningham told authorities that Porter was framed for Tyrone's murder by Juan Sanders and his current wife Cecelia.

The documents show Cunningham told investigators Sanders asked him to kill Camp.

Cunningham says he told him no and Camp was killed a short time later.

Within weeks after the murder, the documents say Sanders was threatening witnesses.
It goes on to say that Sanders told them to tell police that they drove Porter to the crime scene to kill Camp.

'I know he's smiling down on us and justice will be served,' says Tyrone's twin brother, Jerome Camp.

The documents also show that the victim's brother told police that Cecilia Sanders was the only other person, besides himself, who knew that Tyrone would be working at Active Transportation the day he was murdered.

WHAS 11 News went to Cecilia's house on Shumake Court in Louisville.

Nobody was home.

'Thank you Jerome, family, friends and supporters. It took more than me to get me out. Jerome played a major part in my freedom,' said Porter.
