LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A truck driver has been hospitalized after a trailer hauling horses crashed in Nelson County.
According to the Bardstown Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the Bluegrass Parkway near the Bardstown exit just before 5 a.m. Monday.
When crews arrived on scene, they found a trailer on the embankment containing horses. The trailer was reportedly dislodged from the king pin, ripping the cab of the truck from the frame.
It took crews about 30 minutes to help the driver from the vehicle. He was flown to UofL Hospital with his condition unknown.
Seven horses were still inside the trailer and large animal rescue crews from Anderson County were called in to help. Some of the horses had to be sedated to get them out of the trailer. In all, it took four hours to remove them. Three horses died in the accident while four others were placed in equine ambulances.
Authorities said the horses were being transported from Louisiana to Keenland in Lexington.
The believe the estimated loss of the horses were valued at $450,000.
