60 firefighters battle two-alarm blaze in Louisville's Portland neighborhood

The department said the fire happened in the 2600 block of Portland Avenue Tuesday evening.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Firefighters are working the scene of a two-alarm fire in the Portland neighborhood.

According to Captain Donovan Sims, about 60 firefighters responded to the blaze at a two-story brick structure in the 2600 block of Portland Avenue around 7 p.m. Tuesday. He said it took longer than an hour to get the fire under control.

Crews noticed flames coming from the rear of the building.

Sims said there was a partial collapse of the structure and that firefighters were containing the blaze to keep it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

There was no one inside the building and no injuries were reported.

The building is located to the right of Shaheen’s Department Store and it’s unknown if the fire affected their property.

Agencies had to cut power to the street, so neighbors gathered in the street to watch.

"It's not a happy occasion, its mourning because we love these old buildings and we love this community because of these old buildings among other reasons, but I'm like, my house is going to be hot so I might as well stay outside there's a bit of a breeze," neighbor Caleb Brooks said.
