LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An attorney representing the mother of David McAtee said the video released by Louisville police raises more questions than it answers.
Steve Romines of Romines, Weis and Young said McAtee's mother, Odessa Riley, wants to get to the truth of what happened the night her son died. LMPD allege McAtee opened fire as officers approached his business, using pepper balls to disperse a crowd at 26th and Broadway.
Romines questioned why police released "a few seconds of video" when the investigation into McAtee's death is ongoing.
"The police continually refuse to release evidence in these type of cases because they say 'the investigation is ongoing,' yet they choose to selectively release a few seconds of video to try and bolster an untenable position," Romines said.
The attorney also questioned why the videos released were only from McAtee's surveillance cameras. WHAS11 has seen several surveillance cameras in the area. Mayor Greg Fischer said he is not aware of any more videos, however said LMPD might be aware.
"When they're available, we'll happily show them, just like we did the first two," Fischer said to WHAS11.
LMPD said the officers involved in the shooting were either not wearing or did not turn on body cameras, a violation of policy. During that announcement, Fischer also announced the firing of Chief Steve Conrad, who was scheduled to retire at the end of June.
Fischer has called for an external review of the police department while looking for a new police chief.
