Documentary highlighting UofL and Central High's partnership in law program set to debut

“A Pathway Forward” covers Central’s law program and how the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law has been providing resources and mentors to the school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new documentary celebrating the partnership between the University of Louisville and Central High School is set to premiere this week.

For the last 23 years, the program has been seeking diverse students to look at what working in the legal profession is like.

The film, “A Pathway Forward” covers Central’s law program and how the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law has been providing resources and mentors to the high school.

Mashayla Hays, a Central alum and instructor with the program credits the law magnet for setting her up with a successful law career and hopes the same for her students.

“I didn’t know a lot of attorneys before I came here and through the program, I met my mentors who I still keep up with today,” Hays said. “I’ve been able to have a tremendous impact on students here

“I think it kind instills in you at a younger age that you can do this. I remember writing my first legal memo – my first legal brief. We had oral arguments. Those are all the things that you do as a first-year law student,” Hays explained. When the time comes for our students who do decide to go to law school, they already know—like I’ve already done this before, so I can do it again.”

Jefferson County Public Schools said more than 700 students have gone through Central’s law program.

“A Pathway Forward” premieres Wednesday at the Bomhard Theater inside the Kentucky Center at 6:30 p.m.
