'I don't like being down here anyway': LMHA helping relocate Dosker Manor tenants

On Friday, a team will be on site at Dosker Manor to work with people who are on the waiting list, and have chosen to relocate to Section 8 housing.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Antonette Hickman is one of many Dosker Manor residents who are eager to move.

The decades long issues of unhealthy living conditions inside the building will be coming to an end soon.

"A lot of people do have mold in their apartment; I don't have it in my apartment, thank God I don't," said Hickman.

Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) plans to demolish the building and has been preparing tenants to relocate elsewhere.

Hickman is looking to live in better housing.

"My rent won't go up it's going to stay the same," she said. "Thank you Jesus. I'm really glad about that."

LMHA is looking to get tenants moved as quickly as possible.

For now, the moves will be on a voluntary basis starting with residents in building A, which is the oldest tower with the worst conditions.

This will help the Housing Authority move more than 500 residents over the next year.

"That's our goal is 12 to 18 months which for some people will feel like a very long time," Executive Director Elizabeth Strojan said.

LMHA will also help tenants find better housing through public housing, Section 8 and affordable housing developers.

"That's why we're offering to cover moving expenses," Strojan said. "We've hired staff to help them navigate the housing market. We're bringing in additional social workers and additional social services."

Hickman is looking forward to touring the other housing sites she could potentially call home.

"I have a meeting Friday and thats where they're going to show me places where I can go and look and find a place," she said.

Hickman said while she will miss some of her neighbors, she won't miss the building.

"I don't like being down here anyway," she added.

On Friday, a team will be on site at Dosker Manor to work with people who are already on the waiting list, and have chosen to relocate to Section 8 housing based on feedback from surveys.
