LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – For 20 years, the Highlands Educational Center has called Eastern Parkway home. But in November, they're going to see some big changes.
“It's kind of a nightmare because we have about 40 children that are dropped off and picked up here every day and we already deal with the traffic from U of L and Churchill Downs,” Lisa Heck, Highlands Education Center for Kids, said.
Heck owns the educational center. She says her main concern will be the traffic for parents trying to pick up their kids but she knows the construction has to happen.
“We'll muddle through it I guess. It's a necessity to get the water pipes working,” she said.
In about a month, the Louisville Water Company will begin tearing up a six mile stretch of Eastern Parkway to repair water pipes. Meaning daily detours for people who travel down Eastern Parkway.
“It's definitely going to be an inconvenience because all of these neighborhoods are going to be flooded with all this traffic,” Amber Gilbert, who lives near Eastern Parkway, said.
With the project set to begin in a matter of weeks, the water company presented a final update for the Metro Council transportation committee and the council members had very few questions and were very pleased with all of the plans for the $25 million project.
“One of our main goals was to be as transparent as we can. I think our customers understand that this is giant water main that we've got to do something to do address,” Kelley Dearing-Smith, Louisville Water Company, said.
The Water Company says despite the traffic inconveniences, home and business owners will not have to worry about going without water during any point of the project. And that's good news for Heck and her educational center.
“We'll do our best to deal with it,” she said.
The Water Company will have updates about the project and detours on social media as well as this website: http://www.louisvillewater.com/project-highlights/eastern-pkwy-project.
