Elizabethtown campaign seeks to curb panhandling

The E-town police department and United Way of Kentucky have joined together for what they're calling a public awareness campaign.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WHAS11) -- On six street corners and busy intersections in Elizabethtown, new signs are going up to discourage panhandling. The signs ask motorists to keep their change.

The E-town police department and United Way of Kentucky have joined together for what they're calling a public awareness campaign. They say panhandlers sometimes prey on people's sympathies with fabricated stories of misfortune or use the money for drug and alcohol addictions.

The campaign asks residents to give to charitable causes that seek to relieve crucial needs in the community instead.
