Elizabethtown police lieutenant placed on leave after shooting inside Hardin County hospital

KSP said a 10-year veteran of the Elizabethtown Police Department is on paid administrative leave after a shooting inside Baptist Health Hardin Hospital on Oct. 19.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police have identified the officer who shot an armed man at Baptist Health Hardin Hospital on Oct. 19.

Lt. Alex Ruiz, an Elizabethtown Police officer, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

According to KSP, Elizabethtown Police received multiple reports about a man inside the hospital with a gun and making threats to hospital staff and patients. It was believed the man, identified as 39-year-old George Lee Jr. of Radcliff, had fired the gun before police arrived.

When officers arrived at the hospital, they said several people ran out of the hospital. Police had entered, encountering an armed Lee in the hallway.

Police said Lee had turned toward officers with his weapon and that’s when Lt. Ruiz had fired his gun, hitting Lee.

Lee was helped at the scene and then taken to UofL Hospital in Louisville where he is in critical but stable condition.

Ruiz is a 10-year veteran with the department.

KSP said the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
