ELLIOTT COUNTY, Ky. — The small community of Sandy Hook, Kentucky is grieving the loss of two first responders who died in the line of duty on the same day this week.
Elliott County EMS said the first occurred Tuesday morning when EMT Ronald "Drake" Adams suffered a fatal heart attack hours after responding to an emergency call.
Later Tuesday afternoon, as firefighters were staging to escort EMT Adams to the funeral home, a fire truck left the roadway and went down an embankment.
Firefighter Frank Whitt of Route 504 Volunteer Fire Department was killed in the crash.
Supporting Heroes said EMT Adams, 34, leaves behind his wife, Ruby, and four young children.
Adams had been with Elliott County EMS for seven years and previously served with Winchester, Kentucky Fire and EMS and Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue. He was also a current member of Route 504 Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighter Whitt was 72 years old and had been with Route 504 Fire for about seven years. He is survived by a wife and two adult children.
A Facebook post by Elliott County EMS Tuesday read: "Both Drake and Frank exemplified unwavering dedication to serving others, and their absence leaves a void that cannot be easily filled. To Drake, Frank, and all our fallen comrades: We will carry on in your honor. End of Watch: 3/12/2024."
