LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A $25,000 donation from the Kentucky Colonels to help the homeless in Louisville comes on the heels of Metro Council’s decision to put more than $500,000 toward the cause. The city has a tight deadline of two weeks to finalize plans for that money.
The city was instructed to find a way to store personal belongings and find a way to house people through a low barrier shelter. Those shelters typically have fewer rules, allowing people to come inside with their pets or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The city said they are working on a sustainable plan for the future.
"In order to solve this problem over a long-term basis, we can't just look at what we're going to do over the next three months to get people off the streets,” Natalie Harris with the Coalition for the Homeless said.
The Kentucky Colonels said the have been following the homeless issue in our city and decided at their last board meeting to donate an emergency $25,000 grant. The group is hopeful the compassion will not end with them. They are asking the community to help with donations as well.
