LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new recreational center for disabled adults has opened in west Louisville.

Russell Engagement Center held its open house at the Zion Baptist Church on Tuesday.

The center engages adults with intellectual disabilities with day programs where they can learn art, technology like virtual reality, craft making and community outings.

Pillar, who runs the engagement center, said they work to “cure the epidemic of loneliness.”

“Our org started when moms got together and were worried who would take care of their loved ones when they passed on and I hope the moms are proud looking down,” Jamese Hmaide, a staff member said. “We take them on outings like trips to the [Louisville] Bats games, the Muhammad Ali Center, Churchill Downs – the parks [and] just show them parts of the world people take for granted.
