LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fairdale community members had to opportunity to buy groceries from a mobile market on Tuesday thanks to Kroger's Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative.
The Kroger Mobile Market made a stop at the Fairdale Library to give the community an opportunity to shop for groceries in their own area. Residents could buy essential items like bread, eggs, and milk, which is a big relief for some.
“I think it's really special and I think it's important,” neighbor Arien Clevenger said. “I think we need more things like this in the local community; we need more availability to our meat, our fruit, our vegetables, our things that are going to keep us healthy."
That area of Fairdale is considered to be a food desert by Metro Council after a local grocery store closed in 2022, which caused major headaches for locals.
“I think you feel overlooked sometimes, and like other places in Louisville or in the broader community are getting more time and attention,” Clevenger said.
Councilman Dan Seum Jr. expressed his optimism for community events like this.
“I thank Kroger for coming to our district," he said. "We hope our strong participation leads to even greater investment and food options for our citizens.”
Plenty of residents were able to buy their groceries hassle free, one resident even took time on her lunch break to get items for dinner.
Grant Leuenberger, the mobile market coordinator for Dare to Care Food Bank, explained how the market is a convenient option for everyone.
“Especially the seniors that live in this area, they don't have a way to get to the store, and there is no bus that comes in Fairdale, so they either have to find somebody to take them or God forbid they walk,” he said.
The Kroger Mobile Market happens every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. For text updates on these markets, you can text “Fairdale” to 22300.
