LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville mayor's office and Volunteers of America Mid-States said six houseless families will be moving into the Community Care Campus in the near future.
The Care Campus is a $60 million project to address houselessness in the Smoketown neighborhood.
The families are moving into a temporary shelter while construction is underway.
"This is just part of the effort that we're working on as i mentioned, we know there are a lot of solutions, we know there is a lot of work to do, but all of us here today are gonna keep on working," Mayor Craig Greenberg said.
He also said he and Metro Council are talking about increased funding for day shelters.
Holly Watkins, who places people in homeless shelters in Louisville and is with the Coalition for the Homeless, said this will cut the family waiting list in half.
"I've been talking to families for about a week, trying to determine who we should get in first based on the need that they have," Watkins said.
PNC Bank also donated $100,000 on Monday.
The entire Care Campus is supposed to be done by 2027.
