LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two people are in critical condition after a house fire in the Wyandotte neighborhood.
Fire crews were dispatched to a house on the 1000 block of Beecher Street at around 8:30 a.m. It took 24 firefighters 16 minutes to bring the fire under control, with significant smoke and fire damage found throughout the one-story house.
“I was letting my dog out to use the bathroom and he was at the back fence just barking crazy,” neighbor, Sylvaughna Hays said. “There’s flames coming up out of the back window.”
Sylvaughna said she saw two people who appeared to be relatives trying to break into the home to rescue the residents.
“Two women who had bed poles and a headboard were doing whatever they can to break the windows to get in," Sylvaughna said. “Every time one of the relatives broke a window smoke came out.”
Fire officials said the two adults were unconscious when they were rescued, and are currently in critical condition at the hospital.
The house, officials said, is not a total loss, but has significant damage. Chief Gregory Frederick said it appears the fire was coming from a rear bedroom, but the cause has not been determined.
Crews were unable to find working smoke detectors.
“One thing we like to emphasize throughout the year is the importance of working smoke detectors," Major Battalion Chief, Bobby Cooper said. "We, the Louisville Fire Department, will come and install a detector for free, do a free home safety assessment for anybody as long as you're in the city limits."
