'A crucial error there': Former agent stunned with Secret Service's actions at Trump rally

"That's your job. That's what you do and you had to make sure that roof is secure and that didn't happen in Pennsylvania last Saturday night."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The night of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, Louisville's Greg Gitschier was one of the first to speak about the Secret Service's actions.

Gitscher worked for the Secret Service for over 20 years.

In an interview at WHAS11 News, he said he was stunned when the Secret Service director said a reason for not positioning someone on that roof was because of its slant.

"That was painful in my text group," Gitscher said. "In my text group, they used words I can't say on TV. They couldn't believe that was said."

He added that as young agents, you were supposed to get roof details.

"It's something we did all the time," Gitscher said. "That's your job. That's what you do and you had to make sure that roof was secure and that didn't happen in Pennsylvania last Saturday night. Yes, we made a crucial error there."

He said both the podium and bottom portion of the stage are bullet proof and the president is trained to drop down in moments of gunfire.

Unfortunately, there was no shield for the crowds behind him.

"That's horrible that three people got shot," Gitscher said. "He sounds like a wonderful man, had a great reputation, he was literally shielding his wife and daughter. That fire chief is an absolute hero in my book. He did just what we were supposed to do with the president."

He said the Secret Service needs to right its wrong, whether that means firing people or transferring them.
