LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – He was once Louisville's most high profile charity leader and a top stockbroker.
Presidents, Mayors and A-list celebrities appeared at his events when he asked. But for the past year and a half he’s been in a Federal Prison.
WHAS11 News has learned that 67-year-old Stan Curtis is now out of prison after serving his time.
Curtis entered an Ohio prison in November of 2014. He was actually released in May due to good behavior, but was sent to a half-way house then put on home incarceration. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirms his official release date was originally scheduled for Friday July 29, 2016.
Curtis declined comment after WHAS11 News reached out to him.
He pleaded guilty to stealing $183,000 from USA Harvest, a charity he founded. He also spent $370,000 in donations to pay for meals, entertainment and travel, and failed to report $553,891 in income for 3 years.
He had major success stories before getting into trouble: Creating Kentucky Harvest and Blessings in a Backpack.
Those charities were not were not involved in the theft. Curtis was also crucial in landing Louisville's first PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in 1996.
He was the major cheerleader for the event, educating people as to why it was a big deal to land the prestigious golf tournament.
