Former Louisville Metro Councilman Dan Johnson passes away

Johnson was first elected in 2002 and served until 2017.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Longtime Louisville Metro Councilman Dan Johnson died Tuesday at the age of 64.

According to an online obituary, Johnson passed away at his home. He posted on Facebook in September that he was suffering from ALS.

“On behalf of the Louisville Metro Council, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of former Councilman Dan Johnson," Council President Markus Winkler said in a statement. "He served the residents of District 21 for fourteen years with dedicated advocacy and diligence, and his service to the community will always be remembered."

Johnson was also Democratic candidate for District 38 of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 2016.

According to Johnson's obituary, "He paved and repaired streets and built sidewalks where residents had been forced to walk in the street. His idea that Louisville needed a new downtown arena has brought jobs and prosperity beyond what many thought possible. By his forging a partnership with MSD many of the southend's long term drainage problems were eliminated."

Johnson was first elected to council in 2002. He was censured in November 2017 due to multiple sexual misconduct allegations and later removed from office.

A three-person panel determined he violated the terms of an agreement that initially allowed him to remain on council.

Johnson also served on the Louisville Board of Aldermen before the body was replaced by Metro Council. He also served on the National League of Cities Infrastructure Committee.

Johnson was a member of Beechmont Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to ALS Association KY Chapter.
