Funeral arrangements made for fallen Russell County deputy

The 38-year-old Joshua Phipps was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday night.

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. — Funeral arrangements for fallen Russell County deputy Josh Phipps are set. 

 The 38-year-old was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday night.

According to a Kentucky State Police news release, the Russell County Sheriff's Office was investigating on Bluebird Drive when Phipps was shot and taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.

Another man allegedly involved in the shooting also died.

"Deputy Phipps passed away doing what he loved, serving and protecting the community. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed shooting guns, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends," Phipps obituary said.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m. at 3trees Church with cremation to follow the service. Visitation will be on the same day from 10:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the church.

Before moving to Derby City, the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed Phipps previously worked for them. He started with LMPD in 2020, where he became a graduate of the Metro Academy class 46 in 2021. Phipps served as a second division patrol officer for a few months after the ceremony. 

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear offered his condolences after the tragedy.

“Tragic news for our commonwealth as a Russell County deputy was killed in the line of duty last night,” said Beshear. “Britainy and I ask all of Kentucky to join us in praying for his family, fellow law enforcement officers and the entire Russell County community.”

It is unclear what exactly led to the death of Deputy Josh Phipps.

Phipps is the 11th line of duty death within Kentucky.
