GE fire continues to burn 1 day after massive blaze

After flames and flooding all night, firefighters are now reaching the 24 hour mark as a GE warehouse still burning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- A shelter in place within a one mile radius of General Electric's Appliance Park remains in effect a day after a six-alarm fire destroyed warehouse six of the facility.

Around 7 a.m. Friday morning, fire broke out at warehouse six at General Electric's Appliance Park. The fire spread quickly consuming the plastic materials housed there and the wooden pallets that the plastic rested upon. As the fire grew, additional firefighters were called in until more than 200 of them were on scene.

Officials with General Electric say they have private contractors on the scene using heavy equipment to smother fires throughout the building.

In addition to the flames, a large plume of smoke rose into the sky which some of the WHAS11 audience described it as if a volcano had exploded over downtown Louisville.

Luckily many of the employees were not even at work. Most had gotten the day off because it was Good Friday.

One photo that speaks volumes is a photo snapped just as the fire began. The photograph taken by an employee inside the building just shows the beginning of the blaze where it quickly consumed the plastics and wooden storage pallets accelerating the fire.

There are now 55 firefighters still on the scene to contain the fire. It is still unknown as to what caused the fire in the first place though an earlier investigation by fire crews points towards a possible lightning strike.

They say once the access points are cleared, fire crews can begin extinguishing hot spots.
