Fire consumes Building 6 at GE's Appliance Park

ID=25231979LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Firefighters are working to extinguish the remaining hot spots of a six-alarm fire that destroyed a General Electric warehouse at Appliance April 3.

The massive fire happened in Building 6, which was being used for employee offices and to store parts.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause although reports of a lightning strike could be to blame.

Firefighters say they expect to have the fire extinguished within the next 24 hours.

Air quality tests around Appliance Park have been done since the fire began and officials say test results throughout the past 72 hours are "significantly below" levels that could be potentially harmful.

GE released a statement Monday evening to neighbors who live near Appliance Park:

We want to apologize to any neighbors who may have experienced inconvenience and unpleasantness such as bad odors and ash landing on their property as result of the fire. We are working quickly to address any issues they may have. We have established a resource for affected residents to call and distributed it on Sunday to local officials and MetroSafe and are also in the process of reaching out to the neighborhoods surrounding Appliance Park directly.

They say anyone who has experienced damage or debris in their yards should call (888) 456-7445.

Officials are asking all salaried personnel to report to work on Tuesday, April 7.
