OLDHAM, Co. (WHAS11) – An unlikely culprit caused quite the commotion over Thanksgiving weekend.
Dispatchers took call after call as concerned Oldham County residents described loud, earthshaking sounds on Nov. 24.
"It sounds like a shooting range over here,” said one caller.
“They’re shaking the sheet metal on my garage over here,” said another.
Dispatchers took so many calls, they began answering calls asking, “Is this about the explosions?”
Police set out to find the source those booming sounds. When they arrived at the scene, they found a group of people blowing up giant pumpkins with tannerite, an explosive commonly used in firearm target practice.
DISPATCHER: “Are you calling about the explosions?”
CALLER: “Yes. My god, where is that? It rocked our house.”
DISPATCHER “There are some people blowing up pumpkins.”
CALLER: “Are you kidding me? It just rocked our house.”
CALLER: “Somebody must be awfully bored.”
CALLER: “Oh my god, that is too funny.”

DISPATCHER: “Are you calling about the explosions”
CALLER: “Is that what it is?”
DISPATCHER “Yep, somebody is blowing up pumpkins.”
---
DISPATCHER: “They’re done with it. They were blowing up some of those really big pumpkins”
CALLER: “Big pumpkins?”
DISPATCHER: “Like the 500-pound pumpkins that you see at the fair.”
No one was hurt by the exploding pumpkins.
YouTube has tons of videos of people using tannerite to blow up everything from refrigerators to cars (we don't recommend doing this). So, far no videos of this weekends pumpkin explosions have surfaced.
