Kentuckians react to Gov. Andy Beshear not being named VP Kamala Harris' running mate

This announcement caught some politicians by surprise, but others fully support the decision.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The democratic vice president nomination announcement broke Tuesday morning.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear didn't get selected as Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate.

"I'm kind of glad that we didn't lose him because I think that we need him in Kentucky and I was a little afraid of who would take over for him," said Kim Monroe, who lives in Louisville.

Instead, Harris chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Monroe is thrilled about the Harris and Walz campaign.

"I'm just super stoked about Harris that's all I care about the most and I read a little bit about Tim Walz today, he looks like a super nice guy," Monroe said.

The Walz decision came as a surprise to Republican Kentucky Sen. Damon Thayer.

"[Beshear is] a liberal governor in a red state and as cute as that may be for the national Democrats ultimately I predicted that she would choose somebody from a state where she needed help," said Thayer.

He added he didn't expect to see Beshear's name on the short list and thought "he was named because the Democrats have a pretty thin bench."

Former Democratic Congressman John Yarmuth supported the Walz pick and believed Beshear would be a great addition to a potential Harris administration.

"I think he would certainly be an excellent choice for a cabinet role; I don't know whether the governor wants that or is interested in that," he said.

He's now looking ahead to November and what he calls a dynamic duo in Harris and Walz.

"There's no way not to be excited about Tim Walz, he is as genuine as they come," Yarmuth said.

Yarmuth and Walz did work together in the House of Representatives. He said Walz's personality and character make him a good fit for the ticket.
