Black veterans buried in west Louisville cemetery honored with special ceremony

Ahead of Veteran's Day, Black service members who served in various conflicts throughout American history were honored during a special ceremony on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A ceremony honoring Black veterans was held in Louisville ahead of Veteran’s Day.

Congressman Morgan McGarvey joined the National Association of Black Veterans at Greenwood Cemetery in Parkland on Saturday.

The cemetery is a historic resting place for many Black Louisvillians and veterans.

“We have a history in this state and country where we have not honored our Black veterans and they’ve served every single American conflict,” McGarvey said. “When they come home from war, they face racism, and prejudice. We have to make sure we recognize that – honor and come together to make sure to honor their sacrifice and really try to have freedom and justice for all.”

A wreath was placed underneath the flag to represent all Black veterans from all conflicts in American history.
