Groundbreaking officially held for Walnut Street Park in Russell neighborhood

The former Porter Paints site on South 13th Street will have a breath of new life soon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — More than a year after it was announced, a groundbreaking was held for a new sports park in Louisville’s west end.

Work officially began on the new Walnut Street Park in the Russell neighborhood.

The 5.74-acre park will sit at South 13th Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard – the former site of the Porter Paints factory.

The park will feature a playground, splash pad and pickleball courts.

One of the first features being installed will be a 160’ foot by 360’ foot turf multi-sports field – the dimensions of an NFL football field.

The field is expected to be completed in fall 2025 and will be the home for several youth sports teams.

“As a former little league football coach and proud dad, I know firsthand how important youth sports are for our children,” Kevin Fields, president and CEO of Louisville Central Community Center, said. “Little league football and cheerleading teaches teamwork, discipline and confidence. It also creates a true sense of belonging.”

The park is made possible through American Rescue Plan funds as well as a $250,000 donation from the National Football League Foundation and the Cincinnati Bengals.
