Historic church near downtown Louisville deemed 'abandoned' after massive fire

According to Metro Department of Codes and Regulations, the owner has remained unresponsive.
Louisville Codes and Regulations have visited the 188-year-old church two dozen times over the last three years.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 188-year-old church in downtown Louisville that went up in flames nearly two weeks ago has been declared as “legally abandoned” and a “clear danger to the community.”

The old St. Paul's German Evangelical Church has received visits by inspectors 24 times in the last three years. Recently, the owners of the property were issued violations for improperly boarding up a gate to the rear side of the building six days before the fire.

According to Metro Department of Codes and Regulations, the owner has remained unresponsive. They said they have secured the property located at 213 East Broadway by boarding up windows and doors and placed a fence around the perimeter.

“We are arranging for an engineer to visit the site with us to identify the next steps and determine potential measures to preserve the building’s façade,” Emily Martin, a spokesperson, told WHAS11 News.

The city said they are still making attempts to contact the owner.

They are placing a no trespassing sign on the property and until it is not deemed abandoned, they will maintain it and keep it secure.
