The average cost of most pothole-related repairs is $406, according to AAA.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After recent winter weather and rain showers in Kentucky, dozens of potholes have been reported across Louisville.

Not only can potholes be an annoyance, but they can also cause expensive damage to your vehicle.

Potholes can damage a car’s tires, wheels, shock and struts, tie rods, ball joints, control arms – you get the idea! The average cost of most pothole-related repairs is $406, according to AAA.

Beyond damaging your vehicle, potholes can also be quite dangerous, even resulting in an accident.

That’s why it’s important if you spot a pothole in your neighborhood, don’t just drive around it, be sure to take a few minutes to report it and let city crews know it’s there.

If you notice a pothole on the interstate, those will need to be reported to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for repairs.

To help protect yourself – and your wallet – from costly pothole damage, AAA advises drivers:

  • Keep ties properly inflated.
  • Eliminate driving distractions.
  • Look ahead for road hazards.
  • Be wary of puddles, which can hide potholes.
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

If you can’t avoid a pothole, AAA says to slow down the vehicle, release the brakes and straighten the steering wheel just before impact to help minimize any damage.
