Veteran nonprofit collecting donations for Hurricane Helene victims; How you can help

"This might be an apocalyptic type storm but the hope from the movies is coming I promise you," U.S. Navy veteran Joshua Birt said.

HILLVIEW, Ky. — Local efforts to support those impacted by the flooding in North Carolina are underway. A non-profit based in Hillview is currently taking all kinds of donations to take to victims who were in Hurricane Helene's path.

The Roll Call Foundation is accepting non-perishable food items, clothing, toiletries and more to take to a North Carolina church on Thursday. Donated items like paper towels, batteries and personal hygiene products continue to stack up at the their headquarters.

Ambassador for the nonprofit Justin Hunsucker is welcoming donations day and night until their departure. He's one of many veterans who run the nonprofit and are making it their mission to bring some relief to North Carolinians.

"There's a need and I'm going to go fill it," Hunsucker said. "I'm saying I, but I need it to be really really clearly understood it's not I. There are a bunch of us and whether you're going or not the support that you're providing is absolutely critical."

Hunsucker has been living at the headquarters since kicking off the drive Monday night. They nearly have a conference table full of donations, but the nonprofit's goal is to fill and send a full semi truck of necessities.

Businessman Sean Christopher brought the idea to the nonprofit where it's now flourishing with support.

"We're going to show up and drop off all the supplies and then we are going to simply ask how we can help out and frankly I don't know how long we are staying for to tell you the truth," Christopher said. "If I find out that the need is really great and I need to stay then I will."

Some veterans with personal ties to North Carolina were able to share pictures of the area. Some images show cars over run with rushing water, half of a road completely engulfed in water and even dogs and deer being rescued on canoes.

U.S. Navy Veteran Joshua Birt said his sister-in-law and her family are currently in Black Mountain, NC just east of Asheville.

"They are completely cut off as well with only one road in," Birt said.

Birt said he's a certified rescue climber and he's calling on other veterans to help.

"This might be an apocalyptic type storm but the hope from the movies is coming I promise you," Birt said. "It's coming in the form of vets, it's coming in the form of civilians, pets I'll bring my K-9 with me for some puppy love. Just don't lose hope."

The nonprofit hopes you can help fill their conference room with supplies by Thursday. The Roll Call Foundation is located in the same building as the Hillview City Office at 283 Crestwood Road, Louisville, KY 40229.

You can meet Hunsucker at the door to make the donation, or you can also leave supplies at the front door.
