SCOTTSBURG, Ind. — Getting young people involved in the political process has been a top priority for the political parties.
A 19-year-old in Scott County, Indiana, is taking it a step further. He ran for coroner — and won.
Bryton Richey lives in Scottsburg in southern Indiana. He's been working in a funeral home the last few months and said that helped get him interested in the idea.
He launched his bid for coroner just before he graduated from high school. Richey won the primary and ran unopposed in the general election.
Now, he's working to complete the necessary training and line up his deputy.
"Whenever I'm going to investigate or talk to someone after their loved one has died, I want to provide the best professionalism and comfort for them," Richey said.
Richey also works full-time at a fire department. He said he'll keep that job while he serves his four-year term as coroner.
