JACKSON COUNTY, Indiana — One young child is dead and another is in serious condition after a tragic crash in Jackson County on Thursday afternoon.
Around 5 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a call about a two vehicle crash with serious injuries at the intersection of North County Road 100 E and East County Road 600 N in Hamilton Township, according to a news release.
Police said a 2023 Ford Expedition, driven by 45-year-old Kimberly Sullivan, was heading east on County Road 600 N approaching County Road 100 E. There were three passengers in the vehicle: Addi Sullivan, 12; Archer Sullivan, 9; and Elijah Sullivan, 6.
At the same time, authorities said a 2013 Freight Liner, driven by 52-year-old James Mattingly, was heading north on County Road 100 E, approaching County Road 600 N.
The two vehicles crashed at the intersection, police said, sending the Ford off the north side of the road into a field and the Freight Liner off the east side of the road into a utility pole.
When EMS arrived, Elijah was in critical condition. First responders took him to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he later died. Archer was flown to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in serious condition. Addi was treated on scene before being transported to Schneck Medical Center.
Kimberly and Mattingly denied medical treatment. They both took toxicology tests and those results are pending, authorities said.
The Jackson County REMC, Morrison's Auto Tech, and Salem Wrecker assisted with this crash.
The crash is currently under investigation.
