19 people affected by 'high levels of carbon monoxide' at southern Indiana hardware store

New Albany city officials say there was a "buildup of carbon monoxide" at a local business Thursday morning.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — More than a dozen people were exposed to carbon monoxide at a hardware store in southern Indiana Thursday morning.

New Albany Professional Firefighters responded to the incident. According to fire officials, they believe a machine used by a contractor doing overnight remodeling inside the store led to the "high levels of carbon monoxide" at the Holmes Ace Hardware store on Charlestown Road.

Multiple local EMS agencies responded to the scene, with Floyd County Emergency Management officials saying 19 people were affected. 

New Albany Fire said they treated 11 people on scene, and eight others were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

As of 1 p.m., Charlestown Road is back open and the scene was declared clear by fire crews. However, officials continue to investigate the case.
