JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Seven people, including a police officer, have been taken to the hospital following a fire in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
According to the Jeffersonville Fire Department, firefighters responded to the area of 8th Street and Crestview Court just after 2 p.m. Saturday.
Police said one person had to be rescued from the apartment above where the fire started while one person jumped out of the window. That person suffered a broken leg and the rest of the family inside escaped and were found safe.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael McCutcheon believes the fire was accidental and said it may have started inside a bedroom in one of the apartments.
A firefighter suffered a strained arm while assisting one of the residents onto a ladder. He is expected to be treated at an area hospital and released.
The Red Cross is assisting in helping families find temporary housing while the investigation continues.
