Governor: Indiana to receive $18M in grants to support child care

And some of that money is headed to New Albany.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Indiana will soon get some financial assistance for child care.

Gov. Eric Holcomb announced on Thursday that the state will get $18 million in grants to help support child care.

“We wanted those who know first-hand the critical needs of their employees, and those who are best positioned to partner in their communities, to create child care solutions for their workforce, and they delivered,” he said. “This effort harnesses the combined efforts of businesses, community groups, and schools that want to support working Hoosiers’ careers and our youngest learners across the state.”

And some of that money is headed to New Albany.

According to a news release, overall, 33 employers are planning to provide on-site child care to their employees, and 13 will offer child care tuition for workers.

If a company isn't doing these two things, they will be required to support their care in other ways.

In Floyd County, Community Montessori will get $50,000, and New Albany-Floyd County Schools will receive around $210,000. It is unclear how they will support child care with that money.

The list of second round recipients will be released in early 2024 according to the release.

The funding for the program comes from Indiana's COVID relief funds.
