CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WHAS11) – 13 inmates are now facing new charges of smuggling contraband in the Clark County Jail and three inmates are facing charges of gang activity.

Officials with the Clark County Sheriff's Department say it's part of the new sheriff's effort to sweep the jail of banned items and prosecute offenders.

"If it's a criminal offense we are going to charge it as such we are not going to handle anything in house that can be sent to the prosecutor's office these charges are somewhat serious an inmate could be getting out of jail next week and these charges are somewhat serious - new charges which may delay his time of getting out of jail," Detective Scottie Maples of the Clark County Sheriff's Department said.

The charges were handed down Tuesday and all of the charges against the inmates are felonies.
