Clarksville authorities say thieves claiming to be fire marshals targeting local businesses

The fire department is sending out a warning to local businesses about thieves trying to gain access to buildings by using unsuspecting employees.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Clarksville Fire Department said they are issuing an important warning to local businesses about a possible security threat.

According to Chief Brandon Skaggs, thieves are calling local businesses claiming to be fire marshals with the department.

They are telling unsuspecting employees to take and email interior photos of the business including entrances, windows and offices. They’ll tell the employee “It is part of a safety check.”

“We’ve seen these scams happening in other parts of the country,” Skaggs said in a statement. “Thieves call claiming to be with a local fire department to obtain interior photos, then use information from the photos to commit a burglary after the business closes.”

Skaggs said members of the department or fire marshals never call and ask for that type of information over the phone.

“Any safety inspections will be conducted in-person by a uniformed CFD employee,” Skaggs said.

Those who come onsite will be properly identified.

They believe only one Clarksville business has received the scam calls but could be more who haven’t contacted authorities.

No burglaries have been reported with the scam.
