CLARKSVILLE, Ind. — The Clarksville Town Council is donating $20,000 in honor of a former town councilman that died on Election Day.
David “Red” Worrall was greeting voters near a polling station at Clarksville’s Renaissance Academy when he collapsed. A spokesperson for the town said he was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.
According to a news release, the at-large candidate was invested in the community he served, often donating his time to local charities or being an active organizer for the annual ClarkFEST community festival. He was also the owner of Worrall’s Automotive and Machine Shop for 35 years.
"He could never give back enough," Collin Worrall, Red's nephew, said in an interview with WHAS11. "He meant a lot more [to people] than we even know."
Red played a big role in raising money for the Clarksville Cares program, city officials said. Founded during the 2013-2014 school year, the program provides students and their families with school supplies, food for school breaks, coats, shoes, and other necessities.
Therefore, the Clarksville Town Council voted this week to donate $20,000 in Red's honor. City officials said $15,000 will go to Clarksville Cares and the other $5,000 will go to the David “Red” Worrall Foundation.
The donation will come from funds originally meant for ClarkFEST. The release said the festival wasn’t held this year due to town staff working to revamp the event into "something new."
“Red embodied the very best qualities of Clarksville,” Ryan Ramsey, Clarksville Town Council president, said. “His generosity and kindhearted spirit will no doubt live on through Clarksville Cares and the Worrall Foundation.”
The Clarksville Town Council voted unanimously on Tuesday, Dec. 5 to approve the donations.
