CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WHAS11) – Funeral services were held for Officer Ben Bertram on Tuesday morning in Charlestown, Ind.
Family, friends, and fellow officers gathered at Charlestown High School to say a final goodbye. Officer Bertram died in a crash last Wednesday while chasing a suspect.
The 33-year-old was a graduate of the school where his funeral was held.
Officers across the state and even the country came to support the Charlestown Police Department and the community at the funeral.
"You have officers from many different states that have come to support us. So, seeing that, it definitely hits home how much we actually matter and how much he truly mattered to everyone around us," Officer Patrolman Alyssa Wright, with the Charlestown Police Department, said.
"It's never a long distance when you wanna go somewhere and pay your respects to another officer, another brother in blue that lost their life in the line of duty," Anthony Viania, an officer from the New York City Police Department, said.
Bertram’s career at the department began in 2008 when he started as a reserve officer.
Keith McDonald, the chief of police at the Charlestown Police Department, said Bertram had a stellar career and never received any complaints about him, he was a professional and thorough. He trained a lot of the younger officers on the force and he was looked up to.
Bertram's fellow officer said he was an amazing person.
"An amazing man across the board. Family, community, as a police officer, you can't say enough about him," Wright said.
