INDIANA, USA —

Fireworks laws can vary from state-to-state and city-to-city, and this is no different in Indiana. Before you start setting off fireworks this Fourth of July, here's which ones are legal in the Hoosier state.

In general, people in Indiana can set off consumer fireworks on their personal property, the property of someone who has given them permission or a location specifically designated for fireworks.

Indiana defines consumer fireworks as small devices frequently sold at retail fireworks stores statewide. Display fireworks, however, are illegal without state and federal permits.  These fireworks are much more powerful and are meant for large displays and shows.

Consumer firework use is permitted in Indiana during the following dates and times:

  • June 29-July 3 from 5 p.m. to two hours after sunset
  • July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight
  • July 5-9 from 5 p.m. to two hours after sunset

Indiana bans the use and sale of cherry bombs, M-80s, silver salutes, quarter sticks, and M-250s.

General fireworks safety tips:

  • Fireworks are not allowed within 200 feet of any structure or vehicle.
  • You must be 18 or older to buy, use or sell fireworks.
  • Fireworks cannot be used in any way that violates local ordinances.
  • Keep a bucket of water or water hose handy in case of fire or mishaps.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them in water and throw them away.
  • Never point or throw fireworks, including sparklers, at other people.
  • Only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer use (not professional!)
  • Avoid using fireworks while drinking alcohol.
