LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A homicide suspect is in custody after a standoff in southern Indiana.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said the ordeal began around 5:30 a.m. Saturday after reports of a shooting in the 4000 block of Fort Ritner Road.
Officers arrived at the scene finding a man, 21-year-old Kobe Stancombe of Bedford, dead from a gunshot wound.
In their preliminary investigation, police said Stancombe, 38-year-old Casey Brown, 39-year-old Bradley Harper and a woman were together when the shooting happened.
Police said in addition to Stancomb being shot, multiple shots were fired at the woman when she fled from the vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene told police they saw Brown and Harper flee the scene.
Brown and Harper had been on the move but were spotted around 1 p.m. pulling into the parking lot of Huck’s gas station on West Main Street in Paoli.
Police said they stopped the vehicle, ordering Brown and Harper to get out.
Harper surrendered without incident but Casey Brown, police said, refused to get out of the vehicle which resulted in a standoff.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene including Indiana State Police.
While inside the vehicle, police said Brown had a gun.
For several hours, police negotiated with Brown and used less lethal techniques including the use of pepper balls and gas canisters in the vehicle.
Police allege Brown disregarded their orders and refused to surrender. Brown shot himself moments later, police said.
Brown was removed from the vehicle and officers started life-saving efforts. He taken to the hospital in Paoli but transferred to UofL Hospital in Louisville via air ambulance.
Police said none of the officers at the scene discharged any weapons.
Meanwhile, Harper was taken to the Lawrence County Jail for questioning.
Brown is in police custody at the hospital and faces charges of murder and attempted murder.
The investigation is ongoing.
