Indiana church with ties to Underground Railroad receives honor

For several years in the mid-1800's, Second Baptist Church's 150-foot steeple acted as a beacon to slaves on the Underground Railroad.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The Second Baptist Church in New Albany is receiving national recognition today for their renovation of an iconic steeple.

The church, once known as the town clock church, was granted the Cook Cup Monday for their hard work.

For several years in the mid-1800's, the church's 150-foot steeple acted as a beacon to slaves on the Underground Railroad.

A lightning strike in 1915 destroyed the steeple but in 2016, a group called Friends of Town Clock Church were able to restore it.

“The long legacy Indiana has with slavery culminates with what we're doing here today. We've had a lot of help from a lot of people who have given a lot of time and money to keep this dream alive,” Rev. LeRoy Marshall said.

In addition to the steeple, the group also fixed the roof and clock tower of the church.
