INDIANAPOLIS — Around 400 National Guard soldiers returned to Indiana Sunday after being sent to Washington, D.C. for protests.
Overall, about 1,300 active-duty troops were brought into the Capitol to assist the National Guard during protests. Indiana soldiers were tasked with manning traffic control points, providing security and escorting any emergency crews.
Senior defense officials told the Associated Press soldiers would return after seeing more peaceful demonstrations.
"We are excited to welcome our soldiers back to Indiana," said Brig. Gen. Dale Lyles, Indiana National Guard adjutant general. "I am proud of the professionalism displayed in helping to protect life, preserve critical infrastructure and ensure people's Constitutional rights."
All members will be screened for COVID-19 before leaving Camp Atterbury.
