INDOT wants to widen I-64 in southern Indiana; Here's when construction is supposed to start

INDOT is planning on widening I-64 in Floyd County to address the recent growth of communities and support continued economic development in the region.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Just when Hoosiers thought they would see some relief from the construction, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced new plans to work on Interstate 64 around New Albany.

INDOT is planning on widening I-64 in Floyd County to address the recent growth of communities and support continued economic development in the region.

WHAS11 News asked INDOT officials what their message would be to people who may be upset with a project starting so soon after work is scheduled to finish on the Sherman Minton Bridge.

"So the Sherman is currently anticipated to wrap up by summer 2024," INDOT spokesperson Sidney Nierman said. "And this project is planned to start in late 2025. So it does give a little bit of time there for travelers, without, without work."

Organizers said the project's hope is to improve mobility in the area.

They said they do not currently anticipate any road closures or shutdowns due to the project.

Once started, the project should reportedly take about four years to complete.
