LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Attorneys for the former Clark County, Indiana sheriff charged with 15 felonies have appealed his $75,000 bond, calling it excessive and unreasonable.
Jamey Noel is facing numerous charges related to corrupt business practices, ghost employment, official misconduct, theft and tax evasion.
When Noel was first arrested in November, a judge set his bond at the $75,000 and ordered him to turn in his passport and most of his firearms. He posted bond within an hour of that hearing.
In court documents filed on Thursday, attorneys argue Noel has not shown he deserves such high restrictions.
They said Noel lives and works in Clark County and is not a flight risk.
They asked the Appeals Court to reverse the court's decision.
The investigation started when current Sheriff Scottie Maples discovered a wiretap inside the sheriff's office that was planted during Noel's tenure. After an internal investigation, Maples and his command staff found documents that appeared to be falsified, including efforts to provide a pension to a former employee and family member who didn't qualify.
He's pleaded not guilty to all felony counts.
