Jeffersonville City Council approves agreement to cover fires in Utica Township

In July, the Board of Public Works approved an automatic aid agreement with the Utica Township Fire District.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Jeffersonville City Council formally signed off on an agreement on Monday saying they would take over fire service for Utica Township.

In July, the Board of Public Works approved an automatic aid agreement with the Utica Township Fire District.

Monday's vote formalized that partnership and also began the process for Utica Township to enter into a fire territory with the city of Jeffersonville. When that happens, Jeffersonville will pay off Utica's debts and take over their firehouses and equipment.

Council members said there's already been a great reception from people living in the area.

"They're very happy to see a professional, well-trained, and well-equipped fire department in their neighborhoods," one council member said. "And they feel safe because they know that when they dial 911, they're going to have someone that will arrive that knows how to get the job done."

The Jeffersonville fire chief said the department has the resources to cover the additional area without compromising service.
