JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — A southern Indiana city that is often overshadowed by the Derby City across the river is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Jeffersonville was just named one of the 50 best places to live in the U.S. The up-and-coming city ranked #49, according to a report by Money.com.
The report referenced Jeffersonville's booming downtown riverfront district and its proximity to Louisville as reasons the city made the cut.
In the 1800s, Jeffersonville was a shipbuilding town and largely industrial. Now, this large, suburban city is known for the successful revitalization of its downtown riverfront district.
Since the walking and cyclist bridge was created, the area has been experiencing a commercial boom that's impacted the community and its economy.
The Big Four Bridge, illuminated by rainbow LED lights, allows pedestrians to easily walk from Louisville to Jeffersonville and vice versa.
People aren't just coming to Jeffersonville to visit, they're coming to stay. The short commute to Louisville, lower housing costs, many employment opportunities and family-friendly downtown are appealing to many people.
With a population of approximately 50,000, Jeffersonville is significantly smaller than neighboring Louisville with a population of about 620,000. Smaller cities like Jeffersonville are becoming a magnet for adults eager to move away from larger cities, the report says.
