JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ind. — A Madison man was sentenced to decades in prison after breaking into the home of a disabled man and robbing him.
Clinton Collins, 42, was convicted by a Jefferson County jury earlier this month of burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, robbery while armed with a deadly weapon and theft.
Last September, authorities said Collins broke into the home of a disabled man, threw him on the ground and demanded money. Collins, who was armed with a knife, also stole the victim’s cell phone.
He left the home and went to a nearby Taco Bell. Police said they were called regarding a "drunken man who had damaged the bathroom." That's when officers found Collins.
Authorities said a detective used phone records to figure out that Collins had used the victim's phone to place calls and texts.
The victim also identified Collins through a photo lineup and identified the knife Collins had when he broke into his home.
“I am well-pleased with this sentence,” Prosecutor David Sutter said. “This was a terrifying crime for the victim, who was defenseless due to his disability. I hope this sentence sends a strong message to those who are so bold as to commit such serious offenses.”
