INDIANAPOLIS — An IMPD officer is recovering after a man hit the officer in the neck with a sock full of broken glass early Monday.
Around 6:15 a.m. June 3, two IMPD officers responded to a complaint from a man who is homeless regarding a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of North Illinois Street, near West North Street.
On the scene, officers spoke with the man who said a suspicious man had just attempted to assault him and "broke the strap of his purse." According to court documents, one officer asked the man for his identification to begin a report. The officer also told the man that his shopping cart filled with personal belongings was on private property and had to be moved.
That's when the man pulled out a sock and used it to hit the officer on his neck, but the sock wasn't just cotton — it was full of broken glass.
The officer felt immediate burning in his neck and immediately restrained the man in handcuffs, according to court documents.
The documents also state the man told IMPD he struck the officer with the glass-filled sock because the officer was "taking too long to complete the report."
Medics responded to the scene to remove the pieces of glass from the right side of the officer's neck.
The man was arrested for battery on a public safety official and disorderly conduct. He was taken from the scene to the Community Justice Campus for jail and court processing.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision.
