NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Neighbors say they're puzzled that a quiet and caring nurse was suddenly charged with murder. They say she lived alone in a New Albany home.
Detectives believe she may have lied about a home invasion.
Lisa Shuler, 31, was escorted into Floyd County's Superior Court in shackles and handcuffs. She looked down and had nothing to say to WHAS11 News. Shuler is charged with murder.
'I'm kind of concerned for my own safety and my own home. My grandmother lives with me,' neighbor, Christa McAfee, said.
Neighbors like, McAfee, are on edge after so many unanswered questions.
Gunshots rang out around 9 p.m. Monday night in New Albany and there were reports of a possible break-in.
Brandon Fowler was alarmed as police warned everyone to stay inside.
'Lock your doors so I thought it was burglars or something,' Fowler said.
Shuler's home at the 3800 block of Wabash Avenue quickly became a crime scene. Police say she called 911 and reported she was the victim of a home invasion.
'Somebody said something about five gun shots and the fact they charged this lady with murder,' Fowler said.
Then suddenly she was arrested at 2 a.m on Tuesday. The man's identity has not been released and the Sheriff's Office has not indicated whether Shuler knew the man or if it was a domestic fight.
'Kind of hope it's an isolated incident and figure out what's going on,' McAfee said.
A press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Shuler will be back in court later this week.
